Billions of kids, teenagers and adults around the world consume Coca-Cola every single day. This carbonated drink comes from an international brand that is recognized in countries that make up 98% of the population of the world. It is but inevitable that acne, a skin condition which affects more than 90% of the world’s population at some point of time in life, is linked up with Coca-Cola. This myth that acne could be caused by Coca-Cola constantly does the rounds, especially when people discuss their lifestyle and diet, and relate these to acne eruptions.
While researching on cures for acne various studies have been conducted on the effects food and drinks have on acne. While recommending ways to cure acne, it is often advised to stick to a healthy diet, and lay off junk food and aerated drinks including Coca-Cola. This does not mean that Coke directly causes acne. In fact no soft drink or beverage, including milk, has been proven to be a cause for acne. All dermatologists would agree upon this point.
Possible connection between Coca-Cola and Acne
Acne is mainly caused or provoked by several influencing elements including hormonal imbalance, clogged pores, stress, excessive sebum secretion, and other factors. Youngsters, who consume drinks such as Coca-Cola, often hang around cafes or fast food restaurants. Their skin gets exposed to the environment rich in grease and other impurities. Such people might suffer from acne breakouts, thus, others would connect this to the fact that the Coke they are drinking causes acne. This is a myth.
What could be a possible explanation is that all sugary or artificially flavored and sweetened drinks contain a lot of sugar. Sugar is considered to be a depressant among doctors. So if young people or adults with acne-prone skin binge on coke, many of them might suffer from depression. This is just a possibility and it does not mean that you will get depressed if you have foods that are sweet. Then again, we know that depression is linked to hormones and can be triggered by their imbalance.
It becomes a vicious cycle where people binge on drinks like Coca-Cola and have other junk food to comfort themselves when they are depressed. Providing temporary satisfaction, the high sugar content could actually trigger even more stress. Stress is also one of the factors that may propel acne.
So you see Coca-Cola is not actually a cause for acne. But yes, anything in excess is bad for the health. The best acne cure begins from keeping a strict watch on what goes into your stomach. The more artificial sweeteners, flavors, chemicals, and colors enter your system, the more toxins are going to be let out into your bloodstream. And if not flushed out regularly, the effects WILL show on your skin in the form of acne.
Those who are undergoing an acne cure treatment can see better results if they stay away not only from Coke but other carbonated drinks as well. So go ahead, no one’s stopping you from sipping on your Coke but try and be nice to your body and give it plenty of water, fresh fruit juices, fruits, and veggies too!
